By now it’s likely that you’ve seen some of these headlines, talking about what the future may be, now that artificial intelligence, or AI, is starting to become more and more advanced. But in their haste to warn everyone about what could happen, all these news outlets forget to answer one key question: what exactly is AI?
Most of the content seen on the internet about AI treats it as something alien, entirely too complex for us to understand and far above us in the opinion of some. Yet, it’s still the product of human minds that have worked hard to develop it. So, to understand artificial intelligence, we first have to understand a bit about our own intelligence.
This following image is a question taken from an IQ test, used to test some aspects of our intelligence. The goal is to choose the image (A-F) that best fits on the question mark. Go ahead and try it out!
If you’ve answered E, congratulations, you got it right! The key here was to understand that a) the figure from the first column is the same seen in the third column; b) the line from the second column has to go inside the figure; and c) the line has to be rotated 90 degrees. It’s all about looking at the data and figuring out the pattern.
And I have another piece of good news for you: with this, you have figured out exactly what an AI does – it’s basically just a machine that recognizes patterns. It would solve this test in the same way as you did: look at the data, find the pattern, and come up with the answer.
I’m sure by now you have some questions, like “if it’s this simple, why is AI so hard to make?” or “if that’s all it does, how can it do the amazing things we see it do?”. Well, the hard part about AI is that it has no idea what anything is. The example above is very easy for us, because we know what a shape is, we know it can have things inside, and we know that we can take a line and rotate it. An AI doesn’t even know what a line is, which makes it very hard to figure out how to solve this problem without hours and hours of training. Even so, AI has a very strong point, which brings us to our second question. AI can process tons of data, a lot more than we can. And with enough data and training, it can recognise patterns in things as complicated as the weather, something that humans struggle with.
So, as you can see, AI isn’t some magical alien tool which we have no idea how it works. It’s basically a machine that recognizes patterns in a whole lot of data, after a whole lot of training.

Mas na sua pressa para avisar toda a gente sobre o que pode vir a acontecer, todos estes jornais esquecem-se de responder a uma pergunta-chave: o que é exatamente a IA?
A maior parte do conteúdo visto na internet sobre a IA trata-a como algo alienígena, inteiramente demasiado complexa para ser compreendida e bem acima de nós na opinião de alguns. Contudo, continua a ser o produto de mentes humanas, que trabalharam afincadamente para a desenvolver. Então, para compreender inteligência artificial, temos de compreender primeiro um pouco sobre a nossa própria inteligência.

Se respondeste E, parabéns, acertaste! O truque era entender que a) a figura da primeira coluna é a mesma da terceira coluna; b) a linha da segunda coluna tem que ir dentro da figura; e c) a linha tem que ser rodada 90 graus. É só uma questão de olhar para os dados e perceber qual é o padrão.
E tenho mais boas notícias para ti: com isto, entendeste exatamente o que uma IA faz – é basicamente apenas uma máquina que reconhece padrões. A IA iria resolver este teste da mesma forma que tu: olhar para os dados, encontrar o padrão, e dar a resposta.
De certeza que agora tens algumas perguntas, como “se é assim tão simples, porque é que a IA é tão difícil de fazer?” ou “se só faz isto, como é que consegue fazer as coisas fantásticas que a vemos a fazer?”. Bem, a parte difícil sobre IA é que ela não sabe nada sobre nada. O exemplo acima é muito fácil para nós, porque sabemos o que é uma forma, sabemos que pode ter coisas no interior, e sabemos que podemos pegar numa linha e rodá-a. Uma IA nem sequer sabe o que é uma linha, o que faz com que seja muito difícil resolver este problema sem horas e horas de treino. Mesmo assim, a IA tem uma característica muito forte, que nos leva à nossa segunda pergunta. A IA consegue processar imensos dados, muito mais do que nós conseguimos. E com dados e treino suficientes, consegue reconhecer padrões em coisas tão complicadas como a meteorologia, algo que traz dificuldades para os seres humanos.
Como podes ver, a IA não é uma ferramenta mágica e alienígena que não fazemos ideia como funciona. É basicamente uma máquina que reconhece padrões em imensos dados, depois de imenso treino.
