Our journey began in the most unexpected of places: a physiology class. Nuno Almeida, found himself immersed in a study case that would change the course of his life. The story highlighted a stroke survivor who made a remarkable recovery, thanks to the unwavering support of his son. This poignant encounter sparked Nuno's curiosity about the existing gaps in stroke rehabilitation and care.
Driven by a passion to make a difference, Nuno shared his thoughts with João Ribeiro, founding Braining. Together, they delved deeper into the world of stroke care, discovering a disheartening reality - many patients lacked coherent support, and their rehabilitation often faced insurmountable challenges from the outset.
As the duo pondered on how to bridge this gap, they recognized the transformative potential of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The idea of creating a platform that offered personalized, consistent, independent, and immersive rehabilitation solutions became their mission. Realizing the need for a skilled and diverse team to bring their vision to life, Nuno and João joined forces with David Rodrigues as our Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Joana Sousa as Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO) and Joana Santos as Head of Finance and External Relations. Our team is a dynamic fusion of expertise in AI, programming, and administration, each member bringing a unique set of skills and experiences to the table. Together, we embarked on the journey to make Braining a reality - a platform that goes beyond traditional stroke care, offering a lifeline to those in need. At Braining, we believe in the power of technology to create positive, lasting impacts on people's lives. João Ribeiro, a dedicated Bioengineer with a Master's from the University of Porto, is driven by a deep commitment to healthcare innovation. His expertise in cardiovascular research fuels his enthusiasm to contribute solutions for tangible patient impact. With a keen interest in AI and Machine Learning, João aims to integrate these technologies into Bioengineering to optimize healthcare solutions. As the Founder & CEO of Braining, he seeks to revolutionize stroke survivor rehabilitation.
Joana Santos
CPO
Joana Santos, a bioengineer specializing in biotechnology and molecular bioengineering, brings expertise from national and international projects, including 3D Printing and Tissue Regeneration. With a corporate background in product engineering and development analysis, she has played key roles in the Bioengineering Student Nucleus and is now the Braining's CFO. Joana is motivated to elevate the healthcare sector by merging classical medicine with innovative technologies at Braining.
Nuno Almeida

Nuno Almeida, a Clinical Physiology student at ESS Porto, is a dynamic force passionate about health research and entrepreneurship. A two-time winner of La Caixa Foundation's Young Entrepreneurs awards, Nuno excels in creativity and innovation. From showcasing "Baby Steps" at the National Science On Stage Fair to organizing TEDxIUCS, he now serves in the Communication and Image Department of aeESS. As Founder & CEO of Braining, Nuno balances business, innovation, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact.
David Rodrigues
CTO
David Rodrigues excels in molecular bioengineering, with a passion for integrating technology and life. His academic focus includes developing life support systems for Mars exploration and enhancing photosynthetic microorganisms for sustainability. Braining represents a unique opportunity for him to positively impact lives through technology for superior quality of life, envisioning a future where everyone has access to cutting-edge medical care. His mission is to make this vision a reality.
Mara Marie Gelacio
VR & Immersive Experiences Developer
Currently pursuing a BA in Virtual Reality at the University of the Arts London, Mara have a strong passion for creating immersive experiences. With a deep interest in Social VR and platforms like VRChat, she actively engage in fostering virtual connections. As part of Braining, she aims to combine her expertise in VR with AI-driven innovations to transform stroke rehabilitation and empower patient recovery.
Yasin Dalowar

Yasin Dalowar, an International Media and Computing student from Berlin, Germany, brings a fresh and dynamic perspective to the field of Machine Learning and AI For Braining.
